Sainik school Tilaiya is the 12th in the chain of eighteen Sainik Schools opened in different states of the country. This school opened on September 16, 1963. It provides public school education for boys from Class VI to XII with specific aim of preparing boys for entry into the National Defence Academy and other Officers Training Academies of the three services of Indian Armed Forces.
The school is on a high plateau, (1250 ft). The school has a huge campus with all required amenities and services including Post Office, Telephone Exchange and Bank. The campus has a junior residential section which has classes from UKG to Class V. This section is also quite popular in the region as it enjoys a very high reputation, based on its studentsí successes in various public school entrance exams.
The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi up to Class XII on 10 + 2 pattern of education. The medium of instruction is English, with Hindi, as a compulsory subject upto Class X.
Sainik School, Tilaiya is a wholly residential school for boys only. Admissions are made to Classes VI & IX only through an entrance examination conducted on All India basis, strictly as per merit and subject to medical fitness.
The boys seeking admission in Class VI should be between 10 & 11 years of age and those seeking admission in Class IX should be between 13 & 14 years of age as on 01 July of the year of admission.
Detailed prospectus containing complete information and application form is available for sale from October to December every year which can be obtained on payment of Rs. 300/- in draft for general & defence category and Rs. 200/- for SC & ST category candidates.
A liberal merit-cum-means scholarships scheme has been instituted by the Bihar & Jharkhand State Government for the students domiciled in Bihar & Jharkhand for admission to this school. A limited number of Ministry of Defence Scholarships are also available to the children of Defence Personnel (serving and ex-service personnel) on merit-cum-means basis. Students who secure merit scholarships through competitive examination also enjoy monetary assistance from various agencies.
Games, sports and NCC are compulsory for all boys of this school.
Besides appearing for the Board Examinations, boys of Class X appear for the National Talent Search Examination conducted by NCERT, New Delhi and secure merit scholarships of Rs. 2000/- per year till the students complete their studies in the school. Avenues are open for students to appear for KVPY Scholarship Exam under the aegis of Ministry of Science & Technology. Boys also appear for the General Knowledge Test conducted by various reputed agencies.
Extra Curricular Activities
In addition to taking part in the inter-house debates, declamations, quiz, essay writing and other academics related competitions, various sports tournament is also organised on inter-house basis. The school academic and sports teams represent the school periodically at All India and State Level Competitions. Cultural programmes also form part of the co-curricular activities on important occasions and visits.
