Vikas Vidyalaya was founded in Ranchi in 1952 by the Manav Vikas Vidyalaya Trust, Calcutta. The school has an ancient ethos and tradition that subscribes to the all round development of the students.
The school is located in an estate extending over 170 acres in area. 40 acres are occupied by the school building complex, consisting of a three-storeyed academic block, four hostels - each hostel is divided into two houses; each house has about 65 to 75 students in residence under a housemaster. There is a superintendent in every hostel who assists the housemasters in running the kitchen and looking after the boy’s linen and general cleanliness. Each house has prefects selected from among the boys to help the housemaster in the running of the house. Each hostel has its own common room and dining hall. A hospital, science laboratories - Physics, Chemistry and Biology; workshops, a rifle shooting range, an open air theatre etc. are added facilities.
At present there are 700 students who enjoy the various facilities in the school including 200 acres of a pollution free landscape. They are supplied with fresh milk and vegetables from the school dairy and vegetable garden and partake of a totally vegetarian diet.
The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, for All India Secondary School and Senior School Certificate examinations, 10 + 2 pattern. The school has classes from Class IV to Class XII. The All India Secondary School Examination is taken at the end of Class X and the Senior School Certificate Examination at the end of Class XII. The syllabus of the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi is followed in Classes IX to XII. In Classes III to VIII, the N.C.E.R.T. books and syllabus are followed.
Registration is open throughout the year but the last date of registration for a particular year is 31st May. (With late fee : 15th June). Boys are admitted on the basis of an admission test conducted in the month of February/September. The admission test is a written examination in General English, Hindi and Mathematics. This is followed by an interview.
50% remission of school fees awarded to 15 students on the basis of merit-cum-means.
School terms are the following
1st term : April to September
2nd term : October to March
Games, P.T., yoga, swimming, gymnastics, boxing, karate, tours and excursions are an essential part of education in this school. All the major games are played. Daily games are compulsory for all boys with masters on duty to coach the boys.
Extra Curricular Activities
The school has three sections of the N.C.C. Attending the N.C.C. annual training camp and other courses conducted by the N.C.C. Directorate, if selected, is compulsory. Trekking, hiking and activities under the “Duke of Edinburgh’s Scheme” are regular features of the school. The English and Hindi Literary Societies organize debates, elocution, recitations, calligraphy, quiz and essay, story and poetry writing competitions. The dramatic club stages English, Hindi and Sanskrit plays.
