The Sandur Residential School was started in response to the great need in the country for good, residential schools, with a broad based progressive outlook, imparting a sound liberal education, in keeping with the scientific spirit of the time. It was brought into existence in 1959 by a small group of friends and educationists, consisting of Mr. & Mrs. M.Y. Ghorpade, Mr. & Mrs. F.G. Pearce and Mrs. Mahalakshmi. Mr. M.Y. Ghorpade is the founder of the Shivpur Shikshana Samiti and its governing body which is responsible for the management of this institution. Sandur Residential Composite Junior College is a coeducational, non-sectarian, day-cum-boarding, English medium school.

School Campus

The school is located in the spacious grounds of Shivpur, on the outskirts of the town, Sandur, surrounded by wooded hills and a charming countryside. The school building and dormitories have been designed to take advantage of the beautiful surroundings.

The school has nine modern dormitories, a spacious library well stocked with latest books, modern and well equipped laboratories, well equipped sports complex containing a full sized cricket ground and pavilion, a 400 metre running track, two grounds each for football, hockey, tennis, basketball and spacious facilities for other Indian games such as kabaddi, kho-kho. Girls have a separate dormitory.


The boys and girls come from other places, apart from the residents of Sandur and nearby areas.


The school is recognized by the Government of Karnataka. Education is imparted from primary to plus two stage. (1 Std. to X Std. leading to Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination and the Pre University Course I & II). The school is a member of the Indian Pre University Course I & II). The school is a member of the Indian Public Schools’ Conference and on the approved list of the Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.



Day scholars are normally admitted into the 1st Standard. A boarder’s admission is available into Stds. IV and V depending on availability of seats. Application forms can be obtained from the Principal. Admission to Stds. VI, VII and VIII is through an entrance examination conducted by the school.

School Term

The school term starts from 1st June to 31st. March Mid-Term Break : About two weeks in October Long Term : April and May.


Football, tennis, badminton, cricket, hockey, basketball, throwball, table tennis, kho-kho, kabaddi, malkhamb and athletics are the main school games and sports.

Extra Curricular Activities

Art, craft and social work are a very important aspects of the school. Music, dance, dramatics, painting, clay modelling, carpentry, home science and stitch craft are some of the important arts and crafts for which adequate facilities have been provided. The students are encouraged to take an active part in social work such as “Adult Literacy” and “Shramdan”.
