India Schools : Raigad Military School and Junior College of Science, Mumbai
A group of freedom fighters and social workers under the leadership of the late Nanasaheb Purohit decided to do something for the upliftment of the ex-servicemen’s children. They decided to start an educational institution, which would enable the children of ex-servicemen to join the armed forces as officers. The founders felt that the inherent disadvantages from which the children of these areas suffered, lack of good education, confidence and discipline could be overcome by starting a residential “military“ school. The school was formally inaugurated in 1990. The Junior College of Science was started in June 1993.
The management constantly endeavours to attract the best teaching talent to the school. The emoluments for the staff are reviewed periodically to retain them. The school has well qualified teachers including instructors for physical training and drill. A deputy commandant with a military background looks after the training in discipline and character building.
Boys are admitted to the school on a clear understanding that they will remain in the school and complete the entire course till class XII. All students are encouraged to appear for the N. D. A. The school also prepares students for the Services Selection Board’s interviews and tests. To fulfill one of the objectives of Raigad Military School, considerable emphasis is laid on maintaining discipline among the students.
The school prepares students for secondary school examination (Xth class) of the Central Board of Secondary Education, (CBSE), New Delhi under 10+2 pattern. Senior School Certificate Examination (XII class) of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education under 10+2 pattern. The medium of instruction is English.

The lower age limit for admission of students to VIth, VIIth ,VIIIth and IX classes is 10,11,12,13 years respectively. A written test for admission is held in March/ April every year, simultaneously at Mahad and Mumbai. The candidates are tested for their proficiency in English, science, and mathematics. A merit list based on the result is drawn up and a suitable number of candidates are informed by post to appear for the interview.
Examination are held twice every term. The terminal examination are held in October and the annual examination in April. Besides , there there is a unit test in every term. The teacher concerned keeps detailed reports of the boys’ progress in the class and their homework. A boy who fails in the annual examination will be discharged from the school. The boys’ progress reports are sent to parents / guardians from time to time.
Special emphasis is laid on the physical fitness and games. The school provides facilities for athletics and games like football, hockey, volleyball, cricket and basketball. Facilities for horse riding and swimming have also been provided. To foster qualities of leadership, courage, determination and physical fitness, the school organizes camps for rock climbing, hiking, and obstacle and cross country races. Participation in physical exercise and games everyday is obligatory for all students.
Extra Curricular Activities
These activities form an integral part of the training given at the school. Creative pursuits in other faculties such as photography, painting ,dramatics, electronics, computer science and music are given. Every boy is expected to participate in one of these activities according to his aptitude and choice . Special coaching is given to boys for developing skills in debate, discussions, elocution and quiz competitions.
