India Schools : Sri Dashmesh Academy, Anandpur Sahib
Sri Dasmesh Academy is a unique educational project. It owes its origin to the initiative and enthusiasm of the Punjab Government and the members of the Punjab Defence & Security Relief Fund Committee.
The Academy is located four kilometers away from the famous Gurudwara Takhat Sri Keshgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib. Naina Devi Temple is visible from one of the tall peaks skirting the campus. It is well connected by rail and road and is 80 Kms from Chandigarh towards Nangal Dam. The setting is green and pleasant with a bracing climate. The campus, spread over 203 acres of greenland ideal for a residential school. Besides spacious academic blocks and classrooms, there are 20 well maintained playing fields and a full fledged stadium and gymnasium. There is a multipurpose high roofed hall reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House with an indoor seating capacity of 5000. It has basketball, volleyball and badminton courts. The Academy has a well maintained standard track and para sailing facilities. The Academy also has an open air auditorium and stage which can seat 2000.
The Academy has a staff of very dedicated, qualified and capable teachers drawn from among the best from all parts of the country. The Teacher-Students ratio is an attractive 1:15.
95% seats are reserved for Punjab domiciles and 5% for Punjabis settled abroad. 50% of the students are children of ex-servicemen and serving personnel of the Armed Forces and Paramilitary forces including Punjab Police. Although the school originally admitted only boys, a girls’ hostel has started functioning and girls have been admitted to all classes. The academy also has day scholars from surrounding areas.
The Academy is affiliated to the Council for the Indian Schools Certificate Examination, New Delhi and prepares students for the Class X and Class XII examinations conducted by the Council. At the +2 stage, the subjects offered are English, Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Computer Science, Fine Arts, Economics, Accountancy, Business Studies, Painting and Physical Education.
The annual fee including board and lodging etc. is Rs. 50,000/- per annum.
Admission is open to all Indian Nationals and NRIs regardless of domicile. Children whose names are registered for admission to Class V to IX and XI are required to appear for an admission test. This is followed by an interview by a Selection Committee. Only Punjab domicile wards of personnel of Armed Forces, Para-Military are eligible for scholarships from Endowment Fund.
Scholarships from the Endowment Fund for the wards of Defence Forces and Para-military forces personnel are granted for the domicile of Punjab only. The following scholarships are granted:
Officers Ranks Rs 10,000/- per annum
JCOs and their equivalent Rs 15,000/- per annum
ORs and their equivalent Rs 20,000/- per annum
The Academy has excellent facilities for football, cricket, hockey, basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, gymnastics, boxing, judo, karate, horse-riding and athletics. Swimming and squash are the sports being introduced. The Academy has an NCC Air and Army wing. There is an army standard obstacle course with wall climbing and rope walk. The indoor stadium allows games to continue uninterrupted in bad weather. With the opening of Dasmesh Academy of Martial Sports in the Academy campus facilities for archery, fencing, wrestling, kabbadi, rifle shooting, gatka and meditation & yoga martial arts.
Extra Curricular Activities
These include music, fine art, commercial art, clay modelling, sculpture, wood work, aero modelling, industrial chemistry, masonry, horticulture, gardening, para-sailing and river rifting. Public speaking, declamation, recitation, dramatics, hiking and mountaineering & high altitude trekking are other activities to develop under the N.S.S. and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme (The Award for the Young People).
