The institution is funded in part by the Government of Rajasthan, the Government of India, other State Governments and Vidyapith’s own resources.
The school was founded on October 6, 1935 by Smt. Ratan Shastri and Pandit Hiralal Shastri to fill the vacuum caused by the sudden death of their highly talented and promising daughter Shantabai. Over the years, the Vidyapith has developed into a National Centre for Women’s education.
Banasthali Vidyapith is situated in the Tonk district of Rajasthan, 72 kms. south of the State Capital, Jaipur. The campus is spread over 865.5 acres and 300 acres of farm land. Academic buildings, hostel, staff quarters, hospital and playgrounds are all in the main campus. 250 acres of land is reserved for future development. It has a Post Office, Telegraph Office and Telephone Exchange.
The school’s education programme aims at a fully balanced all-round development of a student’s personality - known as " Panchmukhi Shiksha" (five-fold education)- Physical, Practical, Aesthetic, Moral and Intellectual. The special features of this programme are all round progressive education

- responsibility in behaviour and conduct
- simple living and insistence on doing one’s personal work with one’s own hands
- Community life with no distinctions of caste and religion.
The school has 85 well qualified trained teachers and an equal number of non teaching workers. The university education section has 200 trained teachers.
There are 2,964 students enrolled in the Vidyapith, ranging in age from 8 to 22 years from all the states and territories of India and from foreign countries, out of which a total of around 1500 students are enrolled in school education.
A society registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860, the Vidyapith has been notified by the Government of India as an institution deemed to be a university. The Vidyapith conducts its own Secondary School Certificate and Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations as well as the University level Examinations.
The fees charged are very nominal. Tution fee of Rs. 8,500/- and hostel fee of 11,100/- per annum. This fee excludes expenditure on clothes, books and other personal items.
In the school new admissions are made only in Class V, VI, IX and XI. For all classes except XI, admission is on the basis of an admission test. In class XI, admission is on the basis of the marks obtained in the Secondary School Certificate Examination from a recognized Board/University. The minimum eligibility for application is 55%. Application forms are available in April and must reach Vidyapith by the given deadline.
A few scholarships are offered to highly meritorious candidates who stand first or second in SSC examinations. A limited number of merit-cum-means scholarships are also offered.
The performance of pupils in every academic year has been very high.
Students regularly participate in various types of drills, sports, traditional and modern games such as kabaddi, kho-kho, hockey, basketball, badminton and table tennis. Vidyapith is usually represented in most state and national tournaments. Facilities are available for cycling, horse riding, swimming and yoga.
Extra Curricular Activities
The activities offered at the school are sanganeri printing, painting, clay modelling, doll making, batik, yoga asanas, cycling, riding, shooting, dance, vocal and instrumental music. Vidyapith offers part time certificate and diploma courses in Kathak and Manipuri dances. Computer Programming and Applications is offered as an additional subject at Senior Secondary Level (XI and XIII).
