Tashi Namgyal Academy was founded in 1966 by late Sir Tashi Namgyal, K.C.S.I, K.C.I.E., the 11th consecrated Ruler of Sikkim. It is an autonomous, English medium, coeducational and residential-cum-day school, situated at an altitude of about 5,700 ft. above sea level with a sub tropical climate having an average annual temperature of maximum 250C and minimum 100C and with an annual rainfall of 140".
The school has a rectangular shaped compound, measuring about 12 acres of land and bounded by the National Highway to Nathuala in the southwest and the road leading to Raj Bhawan in the northeast. From the super main gate right down to the lower main gate there is the open air theatre, football court, swimming pool, Principalís bungalow, 3 multi-storeyed buildings and 14 single/double unit staff quarters scattered all over the school campus
There are separate oriental style hostels for both boys and girls with one hostel kitchen and a hostel dining hall. There is also a big auditorium with a capacity of 600, including a gallery and 7 double and three storeyed buildings for classrooms, science labs, common rooms and administrative block.
The school is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi, established by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, U.K., and prepares students for the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (Class X) and the Indian School Certificate (Class XII) Examinations. The medium of instruction from lower K.G. to Class XII is English. Hindi, Nepali and Tibetan are the second languages which the students take from Class I onwards.
The school admits students between the age group of 4 to 13 years. Prior registration is an essential condition for admission. Registration is done in the months of May to July which is notified to the public in the leading local papers. Children whose names are registered are required to sit for an admission test (both oral and written) in mid November preceding the next academic session which begins normally in the middle of February.
The school is recognized as a residential secondary school under Government of India Scheme of Scholarships as well as for Government of Sikkim Scholarship holders. It is approved by the Sports Authority of India for nurturing talented sportsmen.
The school provides all important indoor and outdoor games for both boys and girls, like football, basketball, hockey, cricket, athletics, cross-country race, badminton, skating, table-tennis, chess, archery, judo, taekwondo, gymnastics and swimming. These games are played daily under the supervision of a well trained staff, qualified from NIS, Paitala. Inter-house competitions among the four houses are also organized. The school participates in various Inter-Public Schools games and athletic meets and other tournaments too. Physical training is compulsory for all students except K.G.
Extra Curricular Activities
A wide spectrum of creative and productive activities are encouraged like motor-mechanics, mountaineering, trekking, painting, batik-painting, photography, weather reading, aero-modelling, computer science, editing and publishing monthly news bulletins and school annual magazines. Debates, elocutions and declamations in English, Hindi, Nepali and Tibetan, gardening, band, scouting and guiding, cooking and embroidery and knitting, music, art, craft and other activities are also provided to students as per their options.
