India Schools : Bhavan’s Gandhi Vidyashram, Kodaikanal
The Vidyashram is inspired by the ideals and objectives of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, synthesizing the ancient, but ever relevant and enduring spiritual values of India adapted to the needs and requirements of modern times.
It is located in one of the finest of hill stations in India, on a 31 acre mountain top, at an elevation of over 7000 feet amidst salubrious sylvan surroundings. The Vidyashram has well equipped labs for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science. The school’s library has a good collection of books and journals/periodicals on various subjects. Boys and Girls are housed in separate dormitories. All the boys’ dormitories are supervised by dorm parents, and the girls’ Niketan has a full time Warden. The cleanliness and upkeep of each dormitory is entrusted to an Ayah.
Telephone and e-mail facilities are made available to students. The school has a tuck shop which provides staff and students with the items of personal use. Supply of text books, note books and other stationery items are also taken care of by the tuck shop. There is a ward with six beds to take care of patients in need of medical care. There is a resident doctor and nurses who take care of the students’ health.
The school has well qualified and experienced teaching staff. Interaction with subject expert and the teaching fraternity from other reputed schools are arranged periodically to update their knowledge and skill continuously. Buoyant and cheerful in disposition, they are a team highly motivated to impart of their best to children entrusted to their care.
The school is a residential, co-educational public school with students from all over India and to a limited extent children of Indian and other nationals from abroad and from all sections irrespective of caste, creed or nationality thereby making it truly national as well as international.
The school is affiliated to the Central board of Secondary Education. The medium of instruction is English. Sanskrit, French, Hindi and Tamil are offered as second and third languages. Subjects offered at the higher secondary level are : Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Economics, History, Business Studies, Accountancy, Painting and Carnatic Music.
Prospectus and Registration forms can be made available in December or January from the Principal. The admission test will be in English, Maths, Second Language (Hindi, Tamil or Sanskrit) and General Knowledge followed by an interview with the Principal.
There are play fields for cricket, football, volleyball, handball, tennis, ball badminton, basketball etc. Coaching for these games are provided by the physical directors. Special coaching camps are also arranged with the help from the District Sports Council. The playgrounds also provide scope for a variety of track and field events.
Extra Curricular Activities
For the purpose of co-curricular activities and extracurricular activities the students are grouped into four Sangams viz. Chera, Chola, Pandya and Pallava. Each sangam has both boys and girls from various classes and it functions under a Sangam Captain. Cultural programmes include short plays, skits, debates, quizzes, elocution, drawing/painting and essay/poem writing competitions. The young minds are exposed to dance, drama, bhajans and music. Facilities for learning Bharatanatayam and classical music exist. The children are also trained to chant ‘shlokas’ and texts from the Upanishads and Bhagvad Gita. Yoga is compulsory for classes V to VII. Children also go on excursions and trekking, and overnight camping with their teachers. All the religious festivals, and national days are celebrated with enthusiasm.
