The Rajghat Besant School run by Krishnamurti Foundation India was founded in 1934.
The Krishnamurti Foundation India was originally established in 1928 as a charitable institution, registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 by Shri J. Krishnamurti, the World Teacher and Dr. Annie Besant a personality of international fame in the name of Rishi Valley Trust. The name was changed to the Foundation for New Education in 1953 and to Krishnamurti Foundation India in 1970. The school has established a number of schools in India and the Rajghat Besant School is one of them. Every school is associated with a Study Centre established in the same campus. The intention of establishing these schools is to create in the young children not only an excellent academic capability but also to make them aware of the teachings of Krishnamurti. This may be possible in an atmosphere of natural beauty, care and affection offered to children through people who are deeply and fully dedicated to the teachings.
The entire campus is spread over two hundred acres. The school has well equipped Science Laboratories, a Computer Complex, and technical workshop, separate libraries for junior and senior students and facility for a variety of hobbies. To take care of medical requirements and health care of students and staff, the school has a 20 bed sick ward under the charge of a full time resident doctor.There are separate spacious hostels for boys and girls and for small children. About 15 to 20 students live in a hostel under the care of a House Master/ House Mother. The school has its own catering arrangement under the supervision of a qualified and experienced Mess Manager and provides a balanced nutritious vegetarian diet.
The teaching staff of the school consists of both males and females who are selected by a selection committee. They come from all parts of the country.
There are 350 students in all from Classes II to XII, including boys and girls. There are separate hostels for boys and girls and for small children. About 15 to 20 students live in a hostel under the care of a House Master or House Mother. Since the number of students in a class is small it is possible to give personal attention to every child. In order to create a healthy attitude towards life and nature, students are encouraged to care for plants and gardens, keep their surroundings clean and beautiful and learn the dignity of labour by doing manual work.
The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi and is a member of the Indian Public Schools Conference. It has 350 students and 50 teachers.
The school fees payable annually per student is Rs. 55,000/- (U.S. $ 3,000 by NRIs). Besides, another Rs. 5000/- will be payable p.a. for the cost of books and stationery and for day to day expenses of students. The expenses incurred on providing uniforms and other accessories will have to be met by the parents/guardians separately.
Admissions are made on the basis of an admission test-cum-interview. Parents must accompany their wards for interaction with teachers, house-parents, and school authorities. The main entry points into the school are classes II and VI at the age of 6+ and 10+ respectively. Admissions are made mainly to classes II & VI and for a limited number of seats in other classes up to Class IX on the basis of admission test-cum-interview. However, a few seats are available for girls only for admission to Class XI Science and Commerce streams. Application forms are available every year from December 15 to February 15 for classes II to IX and from April 15 to May 30 for Class XI. All admissions are provisional till the Transfer Certificate, Date of Birth Certificate and Certificate of Physical Fitness are submitted and verified by the school’s office.
The school grants scholarships / concessions in fees to the extent of over Rs. 1,50,000/- to students whose parents are very keen to educate their children in this school but are not in a position to pay full fees prescribed by the school.
The school has a big sports ground of area 9500 sq. m. and a number of small grounds for different games- basketball, volleyball, kho-kho, football, cricket and gymnastics. It organizes annual sports every year in which a large number of students participate in different athletics events. Children are trained in games and sports by a games teacher and a number of coaches. Other than sports, hikes and excursions are arranged by the school.
Extra Curricular Activities
Hobby classes such as photography, electronics, drawing, painting, tie & dye, batik, graphic art, clay modelling, pottery, paper craft, needle craft. Dance, yoga, tennis etc. are encouraged according to the students’ aptitude and interest.
