India Schools : St. George’s College, Mussoorie
The college, a Christian minority institution, was founded in 1853, in a cottage known as Manor House, by the Catpuchin Fathers. It was entrusted to the Society of the Brothers of St. Patrick (Patrician Brothers) in 1894 who took over the Manor House and St. Fidedis High School and started the St. George’s College.
St. George’s College is situated on the summit of a hill on Manor House estate. It is at an elevation of 6000 feet, and 4 kms from Mussoorie. The large campus consists of impressive academic and administrative buildings with the magnificent facade, and a central bell tower that catches the eye. Spacious hostels, a new 1200 seater auditorium, indoor swimming pool, skating rink, a very well stocked library, a gymnasium and excellent facilities for sports and games. The school is divided into four houses: Marthins, Cullens, Tapsells and Gateleys. These are past pupils and former Olympian Hockey Gold Medalists.
Since it is a Christian minority institution preference in admission is given to Catholic boys. However admission is open to children of other communities without distinction of caste or creed. There are both boarders and day scholars at the school and the boys range in age from 8 years to 17 years.
The college is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi. The college is divided into two departments: School Department with classes from IV to X. Students are prepared for the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education at the end of Class X. The College Department has Classes XI and XII and prepares students for the Indian School Certificate Examination. The subjects offered at the +2 level are in the Science and Commerce streams.
Admission is open for boys only. Registration for admission to Classes IV to VIII can be done up to 31st August each year. Admission test in English and Mathematics are conducted in October for Classes IV to VIII only. Boarding fees are charged from 1st March to November 30th (nine months) while tuition fees are charged for twelve months, March to February.
Examinations are conducted in June, September and November. The November examination regarded as promotion examination.
Physical training is a part of the regular schedule and is conducted by qualified instructors. There are excellent facilities for tennis, badminton, basket ball and a spacious swimming pool. The newly constructed gymnasium has facilities not only for gymnastics but also for all indoor games including basketball, badminton and table tennis. There is a well organized Inter school games programme. The months of September and October are devoted to athletics. The boys are specially coached for the Annual College Sports and the Mussoorie Olympics.
Extra Curricular Activities
Debating, dramatics and music are encouraged in the school. Entertainment and instructional films are screened regularly. A number of leisure activities are offered.
