Cinematography
Center for Research in Art of Film and Television (CRAFT) offers a course in Cinematography. The course is well built and tailored with the intention of equipping students with high standard education in cinematography. A cinematographer is responsible for composing each frame in a scene. He/she decides camera angles and lighting, according to the requirements of a director. A cinematographer has to interact with the camera/lighting team and get involved in planning and completing a shoot in the pre-production phase.
Lighting is used to create illusion of day or night. It is also used to change the mood of a scene. The responsibility of a lighting technician is to arrange all the lighting effects modified by the cinematographer as per the instruction of the chief assistant cameraperson. The course brings together traditional filmmaking techniques with the recent digital video and film cinematography.
The film school equips students with training in latest technology like Sony DSR-500 DVCam, Arri 3 and Arri 435 for special projects, Panasonic SDX-900, DXC-30WS cameras for regular projects. CRAFT organizes workshops, seminars, screenings, demonstrations, lectures, etc. to facilitate students to understand creative possibilities.
Students are given thorough understanding of film cinematography and cinematic possibilities of advanced digital video. Students experiment with the innovative use of film lighting techniques and equipment. Students learn how to use the built-in menus of camera to density, control hue and contrast whilst using light meters and lighting equipment to control image quality.
The course curriculum consists of filter usage to create dramatic scenes on location and in the studio. Students are required to spend afternoons and evenings in studio and on location under professional conditions, testing theory and practical exercises in many lighting situations including:
- Night-for-night
- Day-for-night
- Magic-hour
- Close-up tabletops
- Fire and candle light
The faculty at CRAFT reviews every student’s work every morning when students interact with each other about their success, failure, discoveries and critiques earlier day’s shooting. The film school organizes workshops. The working professionals from Mumbai are invited to address to the students. The work of each student will be screened and analyzed during the workshop. The instructor will take up various lighting situations to demonstrate different ways to light them up. Students are given an opportunity to shoot indoor and outdoor in Delhi with the view of solving problems with location shooting. The workshop instructor guides students in typical situation for light up.
The film school hires shooting studios to explore all the possibilities. With the help of practical situation in the studio, students learns variety of lighting styles such as mood lighting, source lighting, glamour, stylization, etc. These workshops help students to get technical fitness and confidence obliged to shoot any professional cinematography project in the entertainment industry.
Upon completing the course, students get into the film and television industry easily. He/she get good remuneration for their creative work. Students can start their career as assistant camerapersons. Once students are well versed with their work, they can earn somewhere between 6, 000 to 35, 000 per day. However, the remuneration depends on experience and the quality of work.
