Film Direction
Center for Research in Art of Film and Television (CRAFT) offers a course in Film Direction. The aim of the course is to impart quality education in the field of film direction. The course curriculum is well designed and modified. It includes theoretical and practical exercises to enhance student’s skills. The responsibility of a director is to manage all creative elements that a film incorporates. A director makes an illusion of the real world. He/She transfers script into reality through motion pictures. A director decides the camera angle, guides the work of costume designers, directs the work of cast and crew, interacts with music directors and cinematographers.
Upon completing the course, students start their career as assistant directors. An assistant director is responsible for arranging things on time required for the shoot. A film needs one or more assistant directors as it depends on the film budget. A director’s responsibility includes preplanning a project to coordinate the cast, crew and scenery within time and budget. An assistant director is responsible for coordinating, whilst the director and producer work on the artistic elements of a film. Furthermore, an assistant director has to keep records of film scripts, sequences, daily reports and call sheets.
It is a very challenging work to handle actors in fiction filmmaking. The direction course provides students with practical laboratory for film and television directors who wish to discover the process of directing actors and crewmembers. A director casts and rehearses a team of professional actors, inspire performances, creates scene coverage to tell a story, work out camera movement and blocking.
The purpose of the course is to explore the process and student’s creativity to direct innovative performance, encompassing imaginative use of the camera, etc. During the course, students discover every side of directorial process. Student’s performance as a director is assessed by frank critiques. The course activities challenge student’s ability to communicate their ideas and thoughts to crewmembers, use the camera creatively, inspire and motivate actors.
Students get industry perspectives by studying composition, structure and interaction of the various aspects of the film and television industry. Students get an understanding of the major players and relationship that compel the film industry. After the emergence of cable television in India, a number of avenues are unfolded to director to search employment. After completing the course, students work as freelance directors for TV serials, game shows, talk shows, music videos, filmmaking, television stations, documentary filmmaking, ad filmmaking, etc.
Every director aims at directing feature length fictions. With the emergence of multiplexes in India, new budding directors are creating independent films that are making waves in the national and international market. Today, regional quality films are also getting a round of applause in Berlin, Cannes and ruling international releases. The course curriculum includes all aspects of filmmaking.
